Puerto Natales was the gateway to get into Torres del Paine so we booked just one night in this town before taking off to the park.

Our night was spent at Hostal Bellavista, which provided us with gear such as sleeping bags and advice about what to do in Torres del Paine.

It was also where we stayed for two days after we returned from the park. The guesthouse owner was very kind and always made sure breakfast was ready early in the morning and even helped us with our laundry.

Private Room:

We had the front bedroom with a very large window facing the street. The room was heated by a gas heater, which we didn’t really like because we’re not a fan of gas powered objects in the house. Our room was right across from the kitchen and the front door of the guesthouse so at times it would get pretty noisy. Also, our bedroom door creaked badly whenever we opened and closed it, but when we returned to the same room after Torres del Paine, we noticed they had oiled the hinges so it didn’t creak any more.

Amenities:

The shared bathroom looked rundown, but did the job with hot showers each time. We also liked that there was a washing machine available to wash all our dirty clothes after hiking Torres del Paine. It cost 2,500 pesos for one load and then hung them in the backyard to dry. There is also free WiFi that worked great throughout the building including in our room. Our booking came with free breakfast including thick rolls, pate and cheese, jam, juice, cookies, yogurt, coffee and tea. The kitchen was also open for guests to cook their own food throughout the day.

Pricing & Location:

We paid $28/night, which was a fair price for the quality of the guest house. Hostal Bellavista was in a nice location with a large grocery store just around the corner and about a 5-10 minute walk to the main city square. It was about a 15 minute walk from the bus station where we took buses to Torres del Paine and Punta Arenas.

I was wondering out of curiosity, do you guys pay in the local currency when you book the hostels and hotels or do you pay in dollars?

When we booked online on HostelWorld the reservation email would should how much we owed in the local currency (as well as what that would equal to in U.S. dollars). If it’s booking.com it will show in U.S. dollars. When we show up at the hostel/hotel to pay for the rest of our reservation, they also have the total amount due converted to their local currency. And many times we would pay in cash at the hostel.
